Product description

The Omegon Pro veTEC 533 is the successor to the popular veTEC 16000 camera. The new square Sony IMX533 sensor represents a huge improvement while maintaining the same pixel size (3.8µm):

  • better quantum efficiency (~80%)
  • lower readout noise (~ 1.3e- @Unity Gain)
  • higher full-well capacity (50,000 e-)
  • ADC: 14-bit
  • Zero-Amp-Glow: No amplifier glow

The result is even less noise and a better dynamic range!

Like the previous model, the camera is equipped with thermoelectric cooling to minimize thermal noise.

Despite its slightly smaller size, the IMX533 sensor is perfectly suited for astrophotography thanks to its square shape.

Professional Deep-Sky Astrophotography: The giant sensor is perfect for wide nebulas, star fields or the lunar surface. Compared to other astrophotography cameras, this one is more akin to the generously sized sensors in DSLR-cameras.

Thermoelectric cooling: The cooling system reduces noise in the image. At 40°C below ambient temperature, the noise caused by dark current is almost completely gone. In addition, the precise control of the sensor's temperature is very helpful for calibrating your astrophotos with dark frames: They all can be made at the correct temperature. The final images are impressively clean.

USB-Hub: 2 USB ports at the back of the camera are reducing the cable chaos of your astrophotography setup. Additional devices (for example guiding cameras) can be daisy chained through this hub. A separate cable connection to your pc for every single device is now a thing of the past.

The camera can be adapted to almost any astrophotography setup, thanks to a T2 thread and a short back focus of only 17.5mm. Of course a 2" nosepiece adapter allows you to simply connect the camera like any 2" eyepiece.

The provided sturdy case with fitting foam inlet gives anyone peace of mind when transporting or storing this valuable camera.

Professional planetary-, lunar- and solar-astrophotography: Capturing the shadows of Jupiter's moons, separations in Saturn's rings, detailed mountain ranges on the Moon or impressive prominences on the surface of the sun - these impressive targets in our solar system can only be photographed properly with a very high framerate: This freezes the so called seeing, turbulences of the atmosphere that usually hide details from view. This 'lucky imaging' technique is now a breeze, thanks to sophisticated electronics and the high bandwidth of the camera's USB3.0. We recommend the Region-Of-Interest feature of the supplied Omegon AstroPhotoCapture software: This optimized the framerate by reading out only the relevant part of the sensor that contains the planet or detail you are interested in.

Transmission: A filter window protects the sensor chamber from dust and humidity. The Omegon Pro colour cameras are equipped with and infrared-blocking filter. Modern CMOS sensors are sensitive to infrared light, so a correct color representation in the final image is only possible by removing these wavelengths before capture. On the other hand, the Omegon Pro mono cameras feature an anti-reflection window, that is transparent to a wide range of wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the infrared. You can add your own filters for unrestricted control over your transmission curve - invaluable for advanced imaging and photometric applications.

Compatibility: The Omegon Pro cameras are compatible with a wide range of available astrophotography programs through the common interfaces ASCOM and INDI. Native compatibility is also being added to a growing number of programs, like PHD2 and N.I.N.A.

Customer reviews

Absolutely recommend - worth every eurocent :-)

After been using veTEC533 over last few months I have to agree with other reviews.
This is absolutely solid product - starting with imaging/sensor quality, TEC performance to overall high build quality and accessories: included Power Supply, built in IR-Cut filter (*little bit more about it later) and the pelican case. This whole package is top notch and it is pleasure to operate and handle this device.
I have had literally zero problems getting off the ground with this gem (admittedly this is my first dedicated astro-cam). I've been using it with Windows/ASCOM (N.I.N.A., Sharpcap, APT, Firecapture) as well as Linux/INDI (Astroberry/KStars) environments. Never has this thing underperformed or let me down.

One thing to note - it's only in latest INDI environment that I get full sensor resolution subs (3008 x 3008). In N.I.N.A. I get 3008 x 3000 and in ASCOM/DirectShow 3000x3000. I am running Touptek drivers in Windows but it was same with the ones from Omegon website. I don't get it but I just go with, making sure I have separate calibration frames for Linux and Windows sessions.

The IR-Cut filter remarks.
I find this to be good quality filter and I haven't observed anything unusual in the subs.
It is however worth to consider carefully if fixed IR-CUT filter is something for you. For example, I often swap between l-nHance and no filter at all to avail of built-in Luminance. But this means I have to reconfigure my optical train past flattener as l-eNhance (actually any filter) changes optimal backfocus distance (in my case by 0.3mm). Alternatively I'd have to replace broadband with maybe another Luminance
filter of same thickness as broadband to maintain backfocus. And for this I'd be better off with AR window in camera and separate IR-Cut/Lum (like it is in equivalent ZWO) but I recognized this issue only some time after the purchase. Other then this I am perfectly happy with camera and I just leave with it, I'll probably get another Luminance filter as this may find use when I'll add mono to my collection.

Bottom line: this is great camera and I now look with confidence at Omegon for my other CCD needs.

Excellent camera for the money

Everything associated with this camera works great and flawless. The properties this camera has are well seen and noticeable in comparison to other cameras in this range, (14bit ADC, small pixels, no amp glow) except for veTEC 571C which has bigger chip than 533, but that's all.
Tested camera last night and it performed great. The square sensor prevents any optical aberrations that may be visible out of optical axis. The cooling and ASCOM driver proved stable, no issues with my old USB2.0 laptop, no dew on the camera window, absolutely great!

Great camera, value for money!

It was time to move on from my modified DSLR to a dedicated camera with cooling system. And yes, that was my best choice!

Great build quality, great packaging, even greater price!

Do you want amp-glow free captures? Yes, you can have it with this camera.

I just loved the square sensor!

The camera works great with a RPI4 with astroberry build. You have to select the ToupTek drivers and you are ready to go. It works flawlessly with SharpCap too (tested Win7 & Win10) with the appropriate drivers from the download section here.

Highly recommended for anyone who does not want to pay a lot for a camera with a cooling system.

It is a very good camera

I have now used this camera for a couple of weeks and my experience has been quite good.

The camera performance is very good, the TEC worked great and in my 5 minutes subs there was no trace of amp glow, also the camera is well built and it comes with a very solid transport case.
The camera has an integrated USB hub, so I was able to have the cables of the accessories well organised.

Form the negative side, I have had some challenges where the computer gets quite slow when I try to open Equipment Profile Manager in SGP and also the download get stuck a couple of times in this 4 weeks, but I guess that those issues are related to the camera drive and I hope Omegon will deliver a new version soon.

Also, I think that they could have more technical information about the sensor, like some sensor analysis as you see in some other brands.

All in all, I recommend the camera, good price, good built, good technical specs.
